Visiting a tailor for the first time can feel unfamiliar — do you need an appointment? What should you bring? How long does it take? Here's a straightforward guide to making your first fitting smooth, efficient, and productive.
Before Your Visit
Gather Your Garments
Bring everything you want assessed in one visit. Even if you're unsure whether something can be altered, bring it — your tailor can advise on the spot. Bringing multiple items also qualifies you for bundle pricing (3+ garments = 10–20% discount).
Bring the Right Accessories
This is the most important preparation step:
- Shoes: Bring the shoes you'll wear with the garment. Heel height directly affects hem length. This applies to trousers, dresses, jeans, and gowns.
- Undergarments: Wear the bra, shapewear, or undergarments you'll wear with the piece — especially for formal dresses or fitted clothing.
- Belt: If the garment will be worn with a belt, bring it for accurate waist positioning.
Have a Reference
If you know the fit you want, bring a reference photo. "I want it to fit like this" is incredibly helpful for your tailor. Pictures from magazines, Instagram, or even photos of yourself in a well-fitting garment all work.
What to Expect at the Fitting
Assessment (5–10 minutes per garment)
Your tailor examines the garment on your body, identifies fit issues, and discusses what you want changed. They'll ask questions like: "Where do you want the hem to hit?" and "Do you prefer a slim or relaxed fit?"
Pinning (5–15 minutes per garment)
Using pins, chalk, and markers, your tailor maps out every adjustment. You can see the proposed changes before any cutting happens. This is your chance to speak up — if something doesn't look right, say so.
Quote and Timeline
After pinning, you'll receive a detailed quote (item by item) and estimated completion date. Standard alterations take 3–7 business days. Rush options are available for urgent needs.
Tips for the Best Results
- Be specific: "Slim but not tight" is more helpful than "make it fit better."
- Stand naturally: Don't suck in your stomach or change your posture. Your tailor needs your actual shape.
- Mention your lifestyle: "I wear this to the office every day" vs. "This is for one wedding" helps your tailor make the right recommendations.
- Ask questions: No question is too basic. Your tailor wants you to understand the process and feel confident about the work.
