What "standard alteration" actually covers

Standard alterations are the everyday adjustments most wardrobes need at some point: hemming, taking in, letting out, replacing a zipper or button, reattaching a fallen lining, fixing a torn pocket bag, repairing a split seam. They're distinct from custom clothing (building a garment from scratch) and from specialty work like bridal, leather, fur and suede, or heavy reconstruction. If the garment exists, fits roughly, and just needs to fit better — that's standard alteration territory.

The line between "alteration" and "remake" matters because it changes both price and timeline. Shortening a sleeve is a 20-minute job on most jackets. Reproportioning a jacket so the chest, waist, and shoulders all balance correctly is closer to a partial remake — still possible, but a different conversation. Figuring out which side of the line a garment sits on is the first thing a good tailor does during intake.

Hem and sleeve length

The single most common alteration is hemming — trousers, dresses, skirts, and sometimes shirts. A clean trouser hem sits with what tailors call a "slight break": the front of the cuff just kisses the top of the shoe with one small horizontal fold. Too short reads casual; too long reads sloppy. Sleeve length on a jacket should expose about a quarter inch of shirt cuff when the arm is at rest. On dresses the right hem is usually decided in front of a mirror with the right shoes — small changes in heel height move the hem more than people expect, and a flat measuring table can never quite tell you the answer.

Waist and seat

The second most common adjustment is taking in or letting out the waist. Trousers and skirts are usually built with a couple of inches of seam allowance at the centre back, so adjustments of up to two inches in either direction are routine. Beyond that the pockets, belt loops, and yoke shapes start to shift and we move into reconstruction territory. The seat is often adjusted at the same time as the waist; the two are pinned together because changing one without the other distorts the silhouette. If you've lost or gained weight steadily, a single pass usually handles it. If your body is mid-change, it can be smarter to delay the alteration until the shape settles.

Jackets are the most architectural garment most people own, and the shoulders set the tone for everything below. If the shoulder seam does not sit on the bone, tailoring can only do so much. We can take a jacket in at the side seams to narrow the body, shorten it by an inch or so from the bottom, reshape the waist suppression, and adjust sleeve length and cuff buttons. We cannot move shoulder seams without partial reconstruction — and even then the canvas, lining, and shoulder pads all have to come out and go back in. When customers ask "can you just take the shoulders in?" the honest answer is usually: yes, but it costs more than the jacket and you would be better off starting from a better-fitting base garment.

Why fit changes how clothes feel, not just how they look

There is a category of customer who walks in slightly sheepish about an alteration appointment, as if asking for a hem to be moved half an inch is vain or fussy. It isn't. Fit determines whether a garment is comfortable enough to actually wear. A jacket whose sleeves are an inch too long catches every cuff button; trousers cut too long fray at the bottom and bunch at the ankle; shirts with too much torso pull awkwardly when you reach for anything. Ask: "What can go wrong, and what is the backup plan?" — every garment has a way to be ruined, and a tailor who has thought about it has also planned for it. Resistance to detail questions is a red flag; a confident tailor welcomes the conversation because it makes the work easier on both sides.

When alterations are not the right answer

Sometimes the honest answer is "this garment isn't worth altering." A poorly constructed dress with fused rather than sewn seams will not survive most alterations. A jacket with shoulders set wrong from the factory can be made to look better but not made to look right. Fast-fashion garments often cost less than the alteration itself; the math does not work. A skilled tailor will tell you when to step away from a garment, and a good studio's reputation depends partly on its willingness to lose a job rather than waste a customer's money on the wrong fix.

Caring for altered garments after they leave the studio

Alterations change the way stress travels through a garment. New seams need a few wears to settle — the threads bed in, the fabric relaxes against new stitching. We recommend not pressing aggressively for the first two or three wears and avoiding heavy spot cleaning right on a newly altered seam for the first month. Dry-clean wool and silk garments after major alteration to set the seams cleanly. Hang jackets and trousers on shaped hangers between wears; the hanger shape matters more after alteration because the garment is now sitting closer to your actual silhouette and less slack absorbs stress.
