Zipper and seam repairs

A broken zipper rarely means a garment is done. Most of the time we replace the whole zipper rather than wrestle a few bent teeth back into line, matching the length, weight, and color so the new one disappears into the design. On jeans and jackets that means something sturdier than a dress would take. On a fine dress we'll set an invisible zipper into the seam. Seam repairs work much the same way. We open the failed section, check whether the thread simply gave way or the fabric itself is starting to tear, and restitch with the right thread weight. A reinforced seam at a stress point, the seat of a pant or an underarm or a pocket corner, can end up outlasting the original.
