There is a better way, and it is the method we reach for by default on quality denim. We take the length out from higher up the leg, then reattach the original hem to the shortened leg. The faded factory edge ends up right where it started, just an inch or two higher. Done properly, it is hard to tell the jeans were touched. This takes more care than chopping and re-sewing, but on a pair you actually like, the difference shows. Length is only one part of fit. A lot of denim comes cut fuller through the leg than people want, so we taper it down, slimming from the knee or from the thigh depending on the look you are after. The trick with tapering is keeping the line natural so it does not pull or bunch at the ankle, with the outseam still sitting flat. We follow the seams and topstitching that are already there so the change blends in instead of announcing itself. Waist adjustments are the other big one. If the band gaps at the back while the rest of the jeans fit, that gap is fixable. We can take a waist in so it sits against your back the way it should, and in a lot of cases let one out a bit when the jeans are snug. Waistband work on jeans is fussier than on dress pants, between the thickness and the belt loops, so it pays to have someone do it who handles denim all the time. Done right, you keep a pair you already broke in instead of going to hunt for a replacement that may never fit as well.
