Hemming: Where the Garment Should End

Hemming sounds easy, and the sewing part mostly is. What people get wrong is the length. A hem has to be set to the shoes you actually wear with the garment, because heel height shifts the break and the puddle by a fair bit. That is why I ask you to bring those shoes along to the fitting. I pin the hem on you while you stand the way you normally stand, then check it again from behind. A lot of folks carry a slight lean forward or back, and that throws off a hem that looked perfectly even on the table once they start walking around in it.

Fabrics call for different hems. A dress trouser with a clean drape gets a blind hem, so no stitching shows on the outside. Jeans are another matter. You want that original topstitched look kept, which means matching the thread weight and color and holding onto the double row that makes a jean hem read as a jean hem. Light skirts and dresses might take a narrow rolled hem or a hand finish, depending on the cloth and how the thing was built in the first place. The method follows the garment.

Taking Garments In

Bringing something in means pulling out width without wrecking the lines that make the garment look right in the first place. On pants and skirts, most of the reduction comes off the center-back seam and the side seams, which keeps the pockets lying flat and leaves the front looking untouched. Pull width from the wrong spots and you end up with pockets that gape or drag, so where the fabric comes out matters every bit as much as how much of it does. On shirts and dresses I usually work through the side seams, and I add back darts when a garment needs them, which draws the body in closer without ironing the shape flat. A shirt that billows around the middle can be brought in clean so it tucks without all that bunching.

Letting out is bringing in run backward, and there is a hard limit to it: I can only put back what the maker tucked away to begin with. Better clothes leave generous seam allowances on purpose, exactly so they can be opened up down the road, which is one good reason a quality piece is worth altering at all. I open the seams, press out the old crease line, and resew at a wider measurement to gain whatever the allowance gives me. I check that allowance before anything else and tell you how much room there honestly is, so you are deciding on actual measurements.

Letting Out and Resizing

Resizing is a bigger job, because it means adjusting a garment at more than one point so the whole thing sits right again. A pair of pants might want the waist brought in along with the seat and the length sorted out at the same time. A dress shirt might need the body slimmed while the sleeves come up so the cuff lands where a cuff should. Skirts and dresses often want the waist set and the hem releveled together, since moving the one changes how the other reads. I look at the whole garment when I do this. Fix one spot in isolation and you can easily leave the rest pulling against it.

Suits and Tailored Pieces

Suits get their own paragraph because they earn it. A jacket can usually be taken in along the center-back and side seams, and the sleeves shortened, but the shoulder and the chest canvas set limits on how far that goes, and I will walk you through where those limits sit before I touch anything. Trousers are a lot more forgiving and take well to waist and seat adjustments along with length. When somebody has dropped a little weight and wants a suit to fit again, I look the whole piece over and give you an honest read on how close to clean I can get it. I would rather undershoot than swear to something the construction will not back up.

Zipper and Seam Repairs

A busted zipper is about the most common repair I see, and it almost never means the garment is done for. I put in a replacement matched to the original on weight and color so the fix more or less vanishes into the piece. On pants, jackets, dresses, and skirts the swap itself is straightforward once the dead zipper is out. The care is in setting the new one so the seam lies flat and the slider runs clean top to bottom. Seam repairs are the other everyday save. A seam that has popped along a stress point can usually be restitched stronger than it started, and when a seam keeps failing in the same place, that is often a fit issue tugging at the fabric, which I will point out to you.
