Keeping the original factory hem

The request we hear most is to shorten jeans without wrecking the look. That is the original-hem method, sometimes called a European hem. Rather than cutting off the bottom and folding under a fresh edge, we detach the existing finished cuff, take the right amount of length out of the leg higher up, then sew the original cuff back into place. The faded, worn edge you liked stays just as it was, now sitting at the length you need. The contrast stitching stays. The wear pattern stays. The color break where the cuff meets the leg stays. Tapering and slimming the leg

Cuts go in and out of fashion, and a leg that felt right a few years back can read too wide now. Tapering brings it in, usually from the knee down or the thigh down, depending on how big a change you want and how the jeans are cut to begin with. Done well, the taper follows the existing seam lines so the new shape sits like it was made that way, with no puckering or pinched-in look. We pin it on you, talk through how it will fall over a shoe, and adjust before we sew. This is a favorite with people who love a pair every way but the silhouette. It gives older denim a current shape without spending money on new.

Waist adjustments and everyday repairs

The waist is usually the trouble spot. We take it in when there is a gap at the back or the pair has stretched out with wear, and we let it out when a favorite has gotten tight, though there is a real limit to how far a waistband moves, which depends on the construction and how much fabric is hiding in the seams. We check the pair first and tell you what is actually possible before quoting anything. Casual clothes wear out where you would expect. Pockets fray, knees go thin, belt loops pull loose, and inseams give way where they take the most strain. We patch and reinforce those spots so a garment you would otherwise toss stays in rotation, and on denim a repair can be matched close enough to read as part of the original pair. If a piece is genuinely near the end, we will say so rather than charge you for patchwork that comes apart in a month.

Most jobs do need an in-person fitting so we can measure and pin on you, because denim sits differently on every body and a number off the tag is not good enough to go on. After that, you pick up when the pair is ready. For some simple repairs, a clear description and a couple of photos are enough to quote without that first visit. And when something turns out more involved than it first looked, we call before doing anything to it.
