We go about it differently. We measure how much length needs to come out, remove that fabric from above the original hem, then reattach the factory edge at the new height. The pair keeps its original stitched band, its thread color, and the broken-in look along the bottom. When it's done well, there's nothing to give it away. It takes more time and a steadier hand than a plain hem, particularly on heavier denim, which is the whole argument for having someone who does it week in and week out. If the original hem is too far gone to save, or you'd rather have a clean modern finish, we'll run a standard hem and match the thread so it still looks intentional. The fitting comes first either way. We pin the length on you in the shoes you wear with that pair, since half an inch of heel changes where the hem ought to sit.

Tapering for a Better Leg

A lot of jeans fit fine in the waist and seat but run wide or board-straight through the leg. Tapering sorts that out. We bring the leg in from the knee down, or from the thigh down depending on the line you're after, and we work both the inseam and the outseam so the leg keeps its shape instead of getting pinched along one edge. The change is the difference between a pair that sits in the closet and one you grab first.

Tapering denim is more involved than it sounds. There are rivets and bar tacks at the stress points, the fabric doubles and triples in places, and the new seam has to lie flat and survive the same wear as everything around it. We sew it to match the original construction as closely as we can, so the altered leg breaks in alongside the rest of the pair. Done in a hurry, the kind of seam that gives out a month later. We don't do it that way.

Waist Adjustments, Both Directions

Waists move. Sometimes the body does, sometimes a great pair just got bought a size off because everything else about the fit was right. We bring waists in when a pair gapes at the back or sits loose, and we let them out when there's fabric to work with. Taking in usually means reworking the center back seam and resetting a belt loop so the proportions stay honest. Letting out depends on how much seam allowance the maker left behind, and we'll tell you what's actually possible before we start. A waist that fits changes how the whole pair sits. The constant hitching up stops, a belt goes back to being a belt rather than a load-bearing part, and a pair you'd given up on gets worn again.

Repairs That Buy a Pair More Time

Denim wears out in places you can predict. Knees thin and blow through. Inner thighs rub raw. Back pockets pull loose at the corners, belt loops give, and seams open where the most strain lands. A pair showing any of that usually isn't done. Most of it repairs cleanly, and the repair almost always costs less than replacing jeans that are otherwise still good.

We patch and reinforce worn spots, reset and rebuild pockets and loops, and close failed seams so they hold. On a heavily used pair we can shore up an area before it gives out completely, which is the smart move once you can see the fabric going thin. Durability is the whole point. A repair that looks fine for a week and then lets go the next month isn't worth doing, so we build them to take the same wear the rest of the pair already survives. The same goes for plenty of other casual clothes, the shirts and jackets and work pants that get used hard and respond well to a solid fix.
