What "standard" actually covers

Calling it standard makes it sound like small work. It isn't. It's the full range of repairs and adjustments that keep clothes wearable for years longer than they'd otherwise last. Hemming is far and away the most common request: trousers, jeans, dress slacks, skirts, and the occasional pair of shorts that need an inch or two off the bottom with a clean, even finish. How far I can let a garment out depends on the seam allowance the manufacturer left inside, so the first thing I do is turn the piece inside out and see what there is to work with.

Zippers, seams, and the small repairs that save a garment

A broken zipper feels like the end of a jacket or a pair of boots. It almost never is. Replacing a zipper is routine. I match the gauge and color, open the seam carefully, set the new one so it runs straight, and close everything back up so you can't tell where the repair happened. Dresses and skirts with hidden side zippers, jeans with a worn fly, jackets with a separating front coil, all of that comes through the shop on a regular basis.

Seam repairs are the other quiet workhorse. A split inseam. A popped armhole. A hem that came undone in the wash, or a lining starting to tear away at the edge. Caught early, these are fast and cheap. Left alone, a small split keeps traveling, and what would've been a fifteen-minute fix becomes a much bigger job that costs more and takes longer. Resizing for the way real wardrobes change

People change size over the years, and so do the clothes hanging in the closet. Resizing pants is probably the job I hear described most plainly: the waist is digging in, or it's loose enough that a belt just bunches the fabric. I adjust the waistband and the seat together so the proportion stays right. Move the waist alone and ignore the seat, and the pants pull oddly every time you sit down. Shirts get taken in through the body, and through the sleeves when that matters too. Suits are their own careful category. The jacket sleeve length, the body, and the trouser break all have to agree before the thing looks intentional instead of borrowed.
