We use the original-hem method instead. The factory hem gets removed carefully in one piece. Then we take the length we need from higher up the leg, above the ankle, and reattach the original hem at the new, shorter length. When it is done, the faded and slightly frayed edge the jeans came with is right back down at the bottom where it lives. The jeans are the length you wanted, with nothing to give the alteration away. This takes more time and more skill than a straight chop, and on good denim that trade is almost always worth making. For heavily distressed or unusual hems we will walk through the choices with you, but for everyday jeans the original-hem approach is our default, and there is a reason for that.

Tapering: fixing the leg line

Plenty of jeans are simply cut wider through the leg than the person wearing them wants, and tastes shift over the years besides. Tapering reshapes the leg from the knee down toward the ankle so the jeans follow a slimmer, cleaner line. It is one of the bigger changes we do, because the shape of the leg is most of what your eye picks up when it lands on a pair of jeans. A baggy older pair can come back looking current without you laying out money for something new. Good tapering comes down to proportion. We take in along the inseam or the outseam, sometimes both, depending on how the jeans are put together and where the extra fabric sits, and we keep the taper gradual so there is no pinch at the knee or sudden choke at the ankle. On jeans with topstitching running down the seams, matching the thread color and the stitch line is part of the job, so the work disappears into the construction.

Waist adjustment: the gap nobody likes

Here is a fit problem nearly everyone has hit. The legs and seat of a pair fit fine, but the waistband stands away at the back, leaving a gap that tugs at a belt and never sits flat. It happens because waistbands are cut to one standard curve, while real bodies vary in how much they come in at the waist relative to the hips. The fix is to take the waistband in so it follows your shape and sits snug against your back.

We also let waists out when there is fabric to do it, which buys a little room in a pair that has gotten snug, so you are not giving up on jeans you otherwise like. Waist work often means reworking the center back seam and resetting the belt loops so everything lines up cleanly once it is done. The aim, same as with the hem and the taper, is a finished waistband that nobody would guess had been touched. Wear the jeans in for the fitting so we can pin the waist on you and see exactly where it needs to come in.

Denim wears out in places you can predict. The inner thighs rub thin, back pockets work loose, belt loops give way, and on jeans that see real use the knees usually go first. A lot of that is repairable, and on a pair that fits and feels right, repair is normally the smarter call. We patch and reinforce worn spots, restitch seams that have opened up, swap out tired belt loops, and deal with the zipper and button trouble that leaves an otherwise good pair stuck at the back of a closet. Same goes for casual jackets, shirts, and the other everyday pieces that need a seam closed or a fit nudged. Casual clothing takes more punishment than your dressier things because you wear it for everything, which is the whole argument for keeping it going.
