Hems on pants, skirts, and dresses

Taking in and letting out

Changing how a garment fits through the body is seam work, and the answer depends on where those seams sit. A dress or shirt usually takes in cleanly at the sides, and at the back too when you want it closer. Letting out is a different question, because it hinges entirely on how much fabric the maker tucked into the seam allowance, which is why we check that before we promise you a number. We pin the new line on both sides and have you move around in it before anything gets sewn. A body is rarely perfectly even, almost nobody's is, so we'd rather watch it on you than trust what looks balanced flat on the table.

Sleeves, shoulders, and jackets

Jackets ask the most of us, because the shoulder and chest are built up inside, sometimes with padding and canvas. Shortening a sleeve is routine, but on a coat with working buttonholes at the cuff it often has to come off the shoulder instead, which is more involved, and we'll price that honestly before we start. Taking a jacket in at the sides and center back is standard enough. Reworking the shoulder itself is a much bigger job, and we'll tell you plainly when a coat earns that kind of work and when its build is just going to fight the change you're after.
