Pants and Jeans

Hemming is what we get asked for most, and there is more to it than cutting and folding. A casual cuff is simple. Dress trousers need a clean break and an even line, and doing it well often means rebuilding the original hem so the alteration stays out of sight. With jeans that have a thick finished edge, we can preserve that original hem rather than leave it raw, which keeps them looking like nobody touched them. Waistband work is the other common request. Taking a waist in or letting it out, sometimes paired with a back-seam adjustment, clears up the gap at the back or the pull at the button. Worn knees, which we see a great deal of from people who work or garden outdoors, get patched and reinforced so they hold up to the next stretch of use.

Shirts

A shirt that sits well on the shoulders but balloons through the middle can be brought in along the side seams for a trimmer line. We shorten sleeves, rebuild cuffs, and repair a frayed collar or split seam before it gets worse. A button that came off gets replaced, and if we cannot match the original exactly, we will say so and hunt down the closest one we can find. On work shirts, the shoulder seam is usually the first place to let go. Restitch it properly and the shirt is good for plenty more wear instead of ending up in the rag pile.

Skirts and Dresses

Dresses ask for more judgment than just about anything on the bench. Taking in a bodice, shifting a waist, reshaping through the sides, all of it has to work with how the dress was built, the darts, the lining, whatever structure is sewn inside. Hemming a skirt or dress means paying attention to how the cloth hangs, since a heavier or draping fabric falls differently than a stiff one and really has to be measured on the body. Zippers in dresses wear out often and are very fixable. We swap them and try to match color and weight so the repair blends in. And a dress that stopped fitting after a change in size can usually be brought back rather than written off.

Suits and Jackets

Suit work is the most involved alteration we take on, because a jacket is built up in layers. We can shorten sleeves, bring the body in at the side and back seams, and hem the trousers and take in their waist to match. This is the case where standing for a fitting really earns its keep. How a jacket sits through the shoulders and chest is something you simply cannot judge off a hanger. We will also be honest with you when a coat has reached the point where altering it stops making sense, so you are not spending money on a result that will only disappoint you.

Why Repair Instead of Replace
